What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound is an imaging method of diagnosing illness or injury by viewing internal body structures. By sending sound waves of high frequency into internal organs and tissues from outside the body. The reflected waves produce images using the same basic principles as radar. Most commonly associated with imaging pregnancies, but used to scan almost all body systems. For structures closest to the surface ultrasound has the highest resolution of any imaging technique, but for deeper and boney structures it can be ineffective. Our ultrasound scans are carried out in a relaxed and comfortable room.
What types of scans do we do a Garran Medical Imaging?
We provide a comprehensive ultrasound service including all general, thyroid, obstetric, musculoskeletal, paediatric, paediatric hip and most vascular services.
Our expertise covers the entire breadth of ultrasound and Dr Iain Duncan’s advanced clinical and ultrasound knowledge will add value to every MSK evaluation.
What equipment do we use?
We have partnered with Samsung Ultrasound and are confident our equipment and sonographers will deliver more detail and diagnostic clarity. We use state-of-the-art technology and new techniques. Several of our diagnostic systems within our ultrasound machine have been developed by Samsung in the last 12 to 18 months. Dr Iain Duncan has been and continues to be involved in developing better imaging techniques and works closely with the manufacturers and system engineers to improve the end result for the patients.
Who will be doing my scan?
We have a team of dedicated and experienced sonographers. When required you will also be seen by either Dr Iain Duncan or Dr Jatinder Shekhawat to ensure we give the best possible information to your referring practitioners.
Is ultrasound safe?
Ultrasound imaging has been used since the 1970’s and has an unblemished safety record. As it is based on non-ionizing radiation it does not have the same risks as X-rays or other systems that use ionizing radiation.Can practitioners other than doctors refer for ultrasounds?
We understand podiatrists and many physical therapists and their patients have specialized ultrasound, interventional, x-ray and MRI needs so our practice is designed to meet them. Medicare rebates are not always available for non-doctor referrals but we are able to provide the services. Dr Duncan’s proficiency in musculoskeletal ultrasound is renowned and he has particularly extensive experience with musculoskeletal ultrasound, assessing the related clinical problems and undertaking interventional procedures when appropriate. Even when ultrasound doesn’t give you the answer he can confidently direct you and your referring practitioner in the right direction.What happens after the scan?
The information and images obtained from the examination are compiled and analysed by Dr Iain Duncan and our sonographers. Dr Iain Duncan will compile a report about the scans in relation to the particular clinical problem.
This is report usually a critical input into both the patient’s diagnosis and/or their doctor’s ongoing treatment and clinical management.
